Inside Homes - Carine Roitfeld

I always find it fascinating to observe how people live. It is always even more fascinating when you are looking into the homes of people who are from creative careers such as artists, fashion designers, photographers and magazine editors.

I always find my self asking, does there surroundings inform their design aesthetic? Do they try to keep their home interior minimal and simplistic so it doesn't impede on their creative process ? Do they chose only to be expressive through what wear and how they engage with others rather than through their personal environment?

The home featuring today, is editor-in-chief of Paris Vogue, Carine Roitfeld. Surprisingly her house is rather simple but I suppose this does counter balance the world of fashion that she lives in, with the richly elaborate photo shoots Paris Vogue is renowned for, and who can forget Roitfeld amazing wardrobe.

Style on Wheels

Bugatti 16c Galibier, true luxury and true style with a truly pausing price tag. This fine piece of machinary is absolutely delicious. A proud car fanatic I am always searching for the newest car with the sleekest style, that engages from the shell, to the dash, to the exhaust. Every inch is there to be appreciated. This is one gorgeous car, and I have to say thank you to Bugatti for recognising the need for a sedan version, as the big sister the Veyron (shown beneath) was crying for a little sister to take care of the week day demands.

Isabella Blow on Alexander McQueen

Seeing the sunshine

When you know that you are not getting enough vitamin D it is time to take the studio outside, and enjoy the fresh air and wonderful sunshine. This all great for the design process and is truly a fresh take for my design studio.

Holding onto time

If you are ever given the opportunity to use a Hasselblad - medium format camera, its strongly recommended. The technical aspects do take a little getting use to, however the beauty of the final outcome truly outshines the minor inconveniences. The colour intensity and feeling of connection you get with the image is one that seems almost unachievable with the digital SLR camera, or is it just the organic feeling you get from engaging with a camera that comes from the late 1940's, that requires more skill than the auto digital SLR counterparts of today.

Either way give it a go - its a truly creative experience.

Botanical Beauty

Any women loves being given a bouquet of flowers. Personally my favourite is just a bunch of one type of flower in the one colour. Simple, classic and clean. Somehow I still always end up with a bunch of Oriental Tiger Lillies. Anyway thats a story for another day.


One fascination I have always had is with botanical illustrations. There is such a whimsical side to them, a part of history, full of colour or delicate strokes of charcoal. They always make me ask, where was the illustration done, what type of artist are they. Is it about art or for scientific purpose.


Maybe next time instead of buying flowers I might just buy a frame to put some of these beautiful botanical illustrations up on my studio wall.

Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson

THIS MARVELLOUS EXHIBITION IS CLOSING VERY SOON: 11th APRIL

The Museum of Contemporary Arts, in Sydney has been presenting since December 2009 various installations, sculptures and photographic works of the Danish - Icelandic artist, Olafur Eliasson.

One of my personal favourites is the kaleidoscope, walk through tunnel. With its amazing colours and formations, you could be mesmerised by it for hours.

Another interesting note is that Eliasson has even done collaborations with Louis Vuitton, for window display in their concept stores.

Sustainable Fashion Seminar - UTS

Today, I was fortunate enough to attend a seminar on Sustainable Fashion - Lifecycles. Master of Ceremonies was Professor Marie O'Mahony, with guest speakers, Jon Lewis - co founder of Greenpeace Australia and photographer, Bronwyn Darlington - founder of Rise Up, Fashion industry consultant for sustainable practice methods, Alison Gwilt - PhD in sustainable solutions and co-editor of up and coming book 'Fashioning Now' and finally Mark Lui - Central St Martins Graduate with a focus on Zero Waste Design.

All aspects of the seminar were interesting due to the diversity of the presenters, from looking at climate change and how it affects people, to how fashion design methodology needs to reconsider the ideas of yester year and explore local resources.

Another point of interest was looking at the conceptual framework of Mark Lui designs, reflecting on his 2007 Zero Wast range and his more recent collections. While I found all his work thought provoking, nothing was more refreshing than his acknowledgement that in order to be successful one must be prepared to try things over and over again, and not to be deterred by failure, because it is through experimentation that sometimes you can have the most interesting outcomes.

'Town & Country' Anyone

The March 2010 of USA Town & Country, is as comforting as 'Tea & Biscuits'. With pages upon pages of glamour and style showcasing the current fashion, interiors and the social scenes.

This months cover story is on the graceful, Australian Rose Byrne, who captures your attention on the front cover wearing a Izaac Mizrahi New York number.

Another inspirational photoshoot found within the pages, is of model Ujjwala Raut. The eclectic styling comprises of all the right things, from a Calvin Klein tank dress, to the decadent embroidered Carolina Herrera Jacket. Even a simple cashmere sweater with a sarong style skirt, both by Dries Van Noten, has you gushing for more. This beautiful shoot was composed by photographer John Huba and styled by Kate Dimmock.

I found this magazine gave me such enjoyment that I could probably even write pages and pages on the fabulous advertising campaigns found within. But lets just say this magazine has nothing but style from cover to cover.
