Sustainable Fashion Seminar - UTS

Mark Lui - Zero Waste Design

Today, I was fortunate enough to attend a seminar on Sustainable Fashion - Lifecycles. Master of Ceremonies was Professor Marie O'Mahony, with guest speakers, Jon Lewis - co founder of Greenpeace Australia and photographer, Bronwyn Darlington - founder of Rise Up, Fashion industry consultant for sustainable practice methods, Alison Gwilt - PhD in sustainable solutions and co-editor of up and coming book 'Fashioning Now' and finally Mark Lui - Central St Martins Graduate with a focus on Zero Waste Design.

All aspects of the seminar were interesting due to the diversity of the presenters, from looking at climate change and how it affects people, to how fashion design methodology needs to reconsider the ideas of yester year and explore local resources.

Another point of interest was looking at the conceptual framework of Mark Lui designs, reflecting on his 2007 Zero Wast range and his more recent collections. While I found all his work thought provoking, nothing was more refreshing than his acknowledgement that in order to be successful one must be prepared to try things over and over again, and not to be deterred by failure, because it is through experimentation that sometimes you can have the most interesting outcomes.
